Mayapott-Homestay
Periyar, Idukki
Mayapott-Homestay Mayapott is an illusion and like it's name suggest a mystical point. Owned by Pottamkulams, this is a home that is literally built on a rock. The house rests in the "chekuthanmala" (devils rock) valley with views from the house facing the hills all around. A short while from Thekkady, the seat of the Periyar wildlife reserve (the new highway being constructed will take you to Periyar in 20 mins). Set amidst 100 acres of cardamom plantation, Mayapott is built around a huge rock, which was used as a resting point for hunters. Legend has it that the bonfire around which they rested was a safe refuge from the herd of wild elephants that raged the area. Built entirely out of chiseled rock from the region, the structure is unique in the fact that little cement is used to bond the building rocks together. Each rock was painstakingly tem plated on to the other. The wood ('mullu venga') that is used around the house is of a special variety and can with stand wet weather for years together.

The entire structure is in tune with the terrain and the topography with beautiful, well-appointed rooms built into the contours of the land and rock. Thefireplace is a good idea for cozy evenings, and there's a barbecue anytime you want. Plantation tours can be an experience.

Mayapott
Mayapott is an illusion and like it's name suggest a mystical point. Owned by Mr. Jojo George, this is a home that is literally built on a rock. The house rests in the "chekuthanmala" (devils rock) valley with views from the house facing the hills all around. E ach rock was painstakingly templated on to the other. The wood ('mullu venga') that is used around the house is of a special variety and can with stand wet weather for years together.

A bridge connects the two portions of the house, and a stream flows under it - a beautiful experience during the rains. Nearby, there is the huge pond that serves as a storage tank for irrigating the plantation.
